How to Become an Internet Land Baron

on September 3, 2010 by Jude Emantsal in Other News, Comments (0)

When entrepreneur Juan Diego Calle asked the Colombian government to let him sell their Internet real-estate, he knew it was a long shot. The Harvard-educated Colombian native was battling over only two letters of the alphabet, but his request was tall: Let me commercialize the nation’s Internet identity.

AP Issues Standards Memo: ‘Combat In Iraq Is Not Over’

on by Jude Emantsal in Other News, Comments (0)

At some point in the last two weeks, you may have been told by someone in the news that combat operations in Iraq were over, and that the last combat troop had left the country. Well, the Associated Press is not having any of it, and in a memo from their standards editor, Tom Kent, the law in this regard has been laid down, in no uncertain terms: “To begin with, combat in Iraq is not over, and we should not uncritically repeat suggestions that it is, even if they come from senior officials.”

If you recall, on August 18, 2010, NBC broadcast their world news exclusive report that the War in Iraq was over, and that the “last U.S. combat troops have pulled out of Iraq.” The story got wall-to-wall coverage on MSNBC, Rachel Maddow reported from the Green Zone, and correspondent Richard Engel got to take a ride on a tank. And all of this exclusive coverage was possible because the Pentagon giftwrapped the story for them. Here’s Brian Stelter of the New York Times:

A Cup to Capitalize on College Success…

on by Jude Emantsal in Other News, Comments (0)

With the advent of the Bowl Championship Series (BCS), there was hope that for once and for all the debate over who is the best Division I football program could be settled year in and year out. We all know that despite the best intentions and the lack of a real playoff system, that has not yet happened. Now whether or not that debate over the BCS Championship is healthy and drives even more buzz is one issue, but the fact remains that sans a playoff system the question still lingers. That of course is not true in any other NCAA sport, where season-ending championships are the rule not the exception. We know who wins March Madness, the College World Series, the Frozen Four, the NCAA Wrestling Championships etc etc. No doubt, it is out there for everyone to see.

However like the BCS, there would or could be some debate as to which overall school, at least on the Division I level, is the best at college athletics. For years quantity — the schools that had twenty or more sports — seemed to rise over quality. While there is no doubt that the real reason intercollegiate athletics should exist is to grow the overall student-athlete for success later in life in whatever field, there is still an interest to find a way to see which university is actually getting a return on the field as well as in the classroom for the dollars and time invested.

TANF Emergency Fund, Welfare-To-Work Program That Created 240,000 Jobs, Nears End

on by Jude Emantsal in Other News, Comments (0)

Advocates of a welfare-to-work program created by last year’s stimulus bill are calling on Congress not to jeopardize some 240,000 jobs by letting the program expire at the end of September.

Republicans and a handful of moderate Senate Democrats blocked a reauthorization of TANF Emergency Fund back in March. The progressive Center on Budget and Policy Priorities reported Thursday that as the program’s Sept. 30 horizon looms, “states are ramping down their subsidized jobs programs, stopping new placements and giving notice that existing jobs will end.”

Fall = Boots… Period.

on by Jude Emantsal in Other News, Comments (0)

Fall is coming and I’m more than ready for it. I’ve already put my shorts away (albeit prematurely, at least here in NYC), I impulse purchased a few fall scarves, and my nimble fingers have lead me to some serious online shopping for my favorite fall accessories… boots. I already have about 4-5 solid pairs from last year’s rotation — but is that enough? No. Am I continually finding the need for new boot elements that I didn’t even know existed? Yes. I need a thicker wedge, a tougher combat, more laces, a deeper brown, a rounder toe, a different decade of vintage, a lower heel, a higher heel… the line between need and want has now become very thin. Where do I turn to indulge my addiction?

For the timeless, rugged, androgynous look, I’m all about Frye Boots. Spit on them, drag them through mud, trek through the city in them, get them caught in a tractor — these boots look just as fantastic (if not better) five years later as they do the day you buy them. Take a look at some of the classic and fall looks:

HUFFPOST HILL – SEPTEMBER 3RD, 2010

on by Jude Emantsal in Other News, Comments (0)

We were worried that this morning’s job report was the harbinger of an uncharacteristically staid recess Friday. Thank goodness that wasn’t the case: Jim Gerlach’s spokesman accused his opponent of playing the race card by not being white around other non-white people, Jan Brewer took unprecedented steps to stem the tide of unwelcome decapitation questions into her state and dentists continue to be the weirdest contributors to our national conversation. Have a great Labor Day weekend, just don’t expect Joe Miller to stop wearing white after Monday — guy’s gotta appease his divine benefactors somehow. This is HUFFPOST HILL for Friday, September 3rd, 2010:

LACKLUSTER AUGUST JOBS REPORT – Our long national flirtation with that novel we’re going to write continues…sort of. The Bureau of Labor Statistics today reported that the U.S. economy shed a total of 54,000 jobs in August but still created 67,000 private sector ones. The net loss was mostly attributed to 114,000 temporary census positions that were cut however the manufacturing sector lost 27,000 jobs, the first time it posted a loss this year. http://huff.to/a1eYob

God’s Covenant, Judaism and Interfaith Marriage

on by Jude Emantsal in Other News, Comments (0)

In the weeks leading up to the Jewish High Holidays, pulpit rabbis across North America will spend countless hours preparing for their most listened-to sermons of the year. For 2010, “intermarriage” may be a popular topic thanks to the recent nuptials of Marc Mezvinsky and Chelsea Clinton. Compared to years past, I believe significantly more of those sermons will be about welcoming intermarried couples into the Jewish community, rather than discouraging young people from following such a path. And that’s a positive development.

Still, even among the most welcoming and inclusive sermons, there will likely be strings attached. Most rabbis will add caveats, perhaps using similar language as Rabbi Steven Wernick, leader of the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism, when he wrote about the Clinton-Mezvinsky intermarriage: “Judaism teaches that in-marriage is a mitzvah, a sacred act that we are commanded to fulfill. As such, it’s always the preferred choice for Jews to make, contributing to the continuity of our peoplehood [emphasis added].”
