The R Word

We were trying on hats at a department store counter when my childhood friend said it.
“I never know how to wear these,” she said. “I’m such a fashion retard.”
New treatments for Hip pain
on by Jude Emantsal in Other News, Comments (0)
An exponential improvement in our understanding of the hip joint and our ability to both diagnose and treat hip pain has occurred in the past few years. We are seeing more and more professional athletes seeking evaluation and treatment of disabling hip pain, recently including the likes of all-star Chicago Bears punter Brad Maynard, Arizona quarterback Kurt Warner, Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez, and Mets first baseman Carlos Delgado.
The most common cause for disabling hip joint pain in the athletic population is secondary to labral tears. The labrum is a fibrous structure that surrounds the rim of the hip socket (”acetabulum”) and has an important sealing function that protects the cartilage layers of the hip like a “gasket seal.” Labral tears typically are the result of some underlying traumatic event such as hip subluxation or dislocation in contact athletes, or due to underlying bony abnormalities in which a “out-of-round” femoral head (”cam lesion”) or over-covered socket (”rim lesion”) pinch and damage the labrum when the hip is certain positions during athletic activities. Mechanical symptoms and restricted range of motion are oftentimes present. Pain with flexion, internal rotation and adduction (impingement position) is present in the majority of athletes with this condition.
Why I, a Democrat, Voted for Scott Brown
on by Jude Emantsal in Other News, Comments (0)
Born and raised in MA, I’ve typically voted Democrat in every election except for city council because Cambridge has proportional representation and the municipal elections are not based on party. The Massachusetts Special Election was the first time I voted Republican for a state-wide campaign. I did it for two reasons: protest and to send a message to President Obama and his White House Chief of Staff, Rahm Emanuel.
We want a change, but we want the change that we voted for in 2008. In an interview with The Wall Street Journal on December 18, 2009, Emanuel told Jonathan Weisman that he was not worried about appeasing the base. My message to Mr. Emanuel is: don’t ignore your base or they will not turn out to vote — or, quite frankly, they will vote the other way out of protest.

Why the iPad Matters
on by Jude Emantsal in Other News, Comments (0)
There have been a host of complaints about the iPad – it doesn’t do this, it doesn’t have that, why can’t it, I wish it would, it’s closed … Even Hitler was disappointed.
All this misses the point.

The Obama administration is not backing down from the president’s criticism of the Supreme Court during the State of the Union address this past week.
Asked on Sunday whether Obama was right to rebuke the justices to their face (with millions watching) over the Court’s decision to allow corporations to spend freely on election campaigns, White House senior adviser David Axelrod called the episode “totally appropriate.”

Gibbs Hedges On Whether KSM Will Get Civilian Or Military Trial

White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs insisted on Sunday that the administration remains committed to trying Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and securing a death sentence. But for the first time in the lengthy debate over what judicial rights should be granted to terrorists, Gibbs hedged about whether the 9/11 planner and others will be tried in civilian or military court.
Pressed by CNN’s John King on whether the White House remained committed to the civilian court route — despite tough criticism from Republicans and concerns among Democrats over costs — Gibbs initially dodged.

What split?
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie were together at Saturday’s Directors Guild Awards. Although they skipped the red carpet and weren’t snapped together, People reports the pair sat together and “looked very giggly” at Quentin Tarantino’s table all night. They were at the ceremony as Pitt presented his “Inglourious Basterds” director with a film nomination plaque.
